How to develop your personal strengths.

Welcome to StrengthsResearch.co.uk.  Here you will find information on a research programme,  investigating the link between personal strengths and happiness.  This program allows you to identify your personal strengths and discover ways to develop your strengths.  Below are details of the program, including what it involves and its benefits, information on the benefits of personal strengths in general, and the opportunity to sign up, all completely free.  Many past participants have signed up to use this programme as part of their personal development plan.

What is the programme?

This study, conducted at the University of East London, falls within the field of Positive Psychology; the empirical study of positive emotions, character and instututions.

The study involves identifying your personal strengths using an online questionnaire, and then using some of these strengths in new and different ways for one week, to see if this has any effect on how you feel. In similar studies done in the past, people became happier and less depressed when doing this, and the same is expected to happen in this study.

Upon completion of the experiment in one week, you will receive another email with follow up questionnaires.  You will receive a final follow up questionnaire in one month.

What will I gain by taking part?

You will gain the following:

  • Knowledge of your own personal character strengths
  • You will learn how to develop your strengths and integrate them into your daily life.  Find out why developing personal strengths is important.
  • It is likely that you will experience increased happiness and reduced depression, as this result was found in previous studies.
  • Throughout the study, you will fill out some forms measuring your levels of well-being.  You will have the option to receive a feedback form, giving details of your own scores on these questionnaires, how your scores changed as a result of the study, and how you can use this information to enhance your well-being in the future.
  • A document offering suggestions for how to use your various strengths in your day to day life
  • Finally, all participants will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win £30 (about $60 US).

  • Full instructions will be provided, and you will receive a document explaining how to use your personal strengths.
Please note that these benefits are not guaranteed and you may be assigned to a control group.

What do I have to do?

Remember, as this programme is part of a research project, it is completely free.

The only cost is the time you spend completing the questionnaires and using your strengths - the more time you invest, the more you will benefit from the programme.

Here is a breakdown of what is involved in the programme, as a maximum (depending on the group you are assigned to, the study may take less time).

1. Firstly, you will complete the initial group of questionnaires, which will take around 1 hour.  At this point, you will receive feedback on your personal strengths.
2. You will then be asked to use some of these strengths in different ways over a period of 1 week (full instructions will be given for this)
3. After 1 week, you will complete the second group of questionnaires, which will take around 30 minutes.
4. Finally, there is one last follow up after a month, to see if there are any longer-term effects.  This last questionnaire will only take 10-15 minutes.
